UK TRANSPORT VISION 2050: investing in the future of mobility
the future of mobility
Executive Summary:
Transport plays a vital role in facilitating the movement of people, goods, and communication globally. In 2019, transportation and transport manufacturing contributed over £109 billion to the UK's economy, representing 5.5% of total output, while also accounting for 27% of the country's Greenhouse Gas emissions. With digitalization, increased connectivity, the transition to net zero emissions, evolving customer preferences, and new modes of transportation, the sector faces significant challenges and opportunities.
Recognizing the importance of transportation, the UK must adapt to these changes. Innovate UK and its partners have invested £4.5 billion in innovative transport projects since 2007, shaping the future of transport in the country.
This vision document, informed by extensive research and consultation with public and private sector partners, outlines the trajectory towards 2050 and the steps necessary to achieve it. The goal is to unite government and industry around a shared vision, driving investment in transport to foster economic growth and societal benefit, while also sparking constructive debate. It acknowledges that alternative visions may exist and welcomes challenges that promote dialogue and evolution.
The vision for UK transport in 2050 is one of seamless, safe, net-zero, connected, cost-effective, accessible, and reliable transportation systems. Leveraging UK design, innovation, manufacturing, and deployment capabilities, the industry will provide high-quality employment opportunities, contribute significantly to GDP, and drive innovation within the country.
